山鹿灯籠祭り (Yamaga Lantern Festival)

山鹿灯籠祭り (Yamaga Lantern Festival)

Yamaga is an onsen (hot spring) town in Kumamoto Prefecture. They are known for a lantern festival where women dance with lanterns on their heads. I believe they have several festivals during the year where these women make an appearance. The one I went to last weekend, a street was decorated with countless thousands and thousands of candle lit bamboo and umbrella lanterns and in a nearby historic theater building (which dates back to the Meji era if I’m not mistaken), the women performed a very traditional dance with their lit lanterns on their heads. It was quite beautiful and ancient tradition to witness.

  1. Hi William,
I came across your site as a result of an old AMV link and was trilled in what I saw here. It was both enjoyable and educational as I have never seen this much detail on casual elements of Asian life in the states.

My family wanted to visit Japan but wondered about the language differences as well as the general perception of foreigners who come there (heard mixed messages on that).

How were you able to adjust to such a different culture and acquire the language so quickly and know the best spots for your photography (just wondering, hope that is not too much info for a post).

all the best and I will be looking forward to your new photos
    regards.
